The seizure of 17 kilograms of methamphetamine in the North West is believed the State’s largest single haul of that drug.
A targeted operation by authorities intercepting two vehicles at a beach side carpark in Burnie last Friday, leading to the discovery of the massive quantity of Ice which authorities estimate has a street value of $8.5 million.
A 40-year-old NSW man and 41-year-old from Hobart, who police allege is a member of an Outlaw Motorcycle group were arrested and charged with trafficking in controlled substances.
The two men have been detained in custody to appear in Devonport’s magistrates Court today.
Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby of Tasmania Police Serious Organised Crime Unit said the seizure sent a clear message to organised crime groups.
“The seizure of these 17 kilograms of methamphetamine is one of the most significant seizures ever by Tasmania Police for illicit drugs. We know by seizing the drugs, it will prevent catastrophic harm to individuals and the broader community,” he said.
