Abandoned shopping trolleys are continuing to be an issue for Coastal councils.

The issue has been brought to a head in Burnie, where the Burnie City Council is investigating introducing a by-law to fine supermarkets and other trolley owners if their trolleys aren’t collected in a timely manner after notification.

The council says the public will be able to comment on a draft by-law, which is expected to be advertised before the end of the year.

Recent discussions between the council and retail owners has seen the issue improve slightly.

Meanwhile, the Devonport City Council has also spoken with retailers after an upsurge in trolleys being abandoned, particularly new the new Living City waterfront parkland, with the issue also appearing to improve in recent months.

Retailers are reminding the public abandoned trolleys can be reported on-line or by phone at Trolley Tracker for Woolworths, 1800 Trolley for Coles, 1800 876 553 for K-Mart, and 1300 554 777 for Bunnings.
