Another legal stoush is developing over whether logging is encroaching on critically endangered Swift Parrot breeding trees in Tasmania.
Similar to the Wilderness Society’s action over government owned Sustainable Timber Tasmania’s logging in the Eastern Tiers, access to a logging plan’s being sought on Mount Tongatabu [Tonga-taboo].
The Society’s Tom Allen claims public scrutiny is being denied.
“We want the forest practices plan for this area released, it is really disappointing today (Monday) in the Supreme Court that Sustainable Timber Tasmania refused to release that logging permit and related documents and so we are going back to court 2pm tomorrow, Tuesday.”
He’s critical of the way transparency seems to have disappeared.
“The whole of native forest logging in Tasmania operates under a veil of secrecy, until a few years ago these logging permits were routinely put on Forestry Tasmania’s website and that stopped.”
