Burnie Council endorses first stand-alone LGBTIQA+ Action Plan among North West Councils

A milestone for Burnie City Council, endorsing a five-year LGBTIQA+ Action Plan.

Council says the plan lays out practical steps to support a safer, more welcoming and inclusive City and was informed by an LGBTIQA+ community advisory group made up of local LGBTIQA+ people, Council representatives and organisations with lived experience and local knowledge.

Advisory Group member and Deputy Mayor Giovanna Simpson said the Plan responded directly to what Council heard from the community – that there is still more work to do to create an inclusive environment,

“More than half of survey participants did not consider Burnie a welcoming and inclusive place for LGBTIQA+ people, while almost 60 per cent said they had limited what they do because of fear of exclusion, discrimination or violence.”

The plan focuses on three priority area’s; a safe and respectful Burnie, Belonging and Connection and an inclusive Council.
