The Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC) has launched a campaign aimed at what is says is the truth about about land use in The Tarkine to combat what it says are myths and untruths being promoted by conservationists.
Minister for Resources and Braddon MP Felix Ellis says the campaign sets the record straight that the Tarkine is not pristin wilderness, but an example of jobs and the environment co-existing for generations.
Mr Ellis says green lock-ups of the Tarkine would amount to economic vandalism, with more than 5900 direct jobs and billions of dollars in export earnings from the state coming from mining alone.
He says on-going attacks on projects by radical environmentalists could also undermine efforts to build a clean energy future.
TMEC CEO Ray Mostogl says the Tarkine is a mix of wilderness, heritage and culture, and industry, with the area already containing 2,500km of roads, 93 km of rail, power transmission lines, two power stations and more than 150 former mining sites.
