The chimes of Ulverstone’s iconic War Memorial Clock tower in Reiby Street have been silenced – for the time being.

The clock, which started operations in 1954, was stopped on Saturday evening to undergo repairs.

The Central Coast Council says the clock will remain inactive until further notice.

A recent routine inspection in preparation for the start of daylight savings, revealed the ladder which allows council staff to change the time mechanism is no longer safer to use.

Central Coast Mayor Cheryl Fuller says safety has to come first and the decision was made to stop the clock, rather than chiming the wrong time, with the chimes audible over a large part of Ulverstone.

Councillor Fuller says the council will consider short and long term options before restoring the time as soon as able.
