Duck season opened today (Saturday) in Tasmania bringing the annual clash of ideologies about its place in modern Australia.
The Greens claim around 500 ducks will be killed every day for the next three months, with Animal Liberation Tasmania’s Kristy Alger upholding the fight against the shoot.
“It is utterly unacceptable, the shooters need to get out of Moulting Lagoon and make the entire site a sanctuary.”
Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson stands by the hunting season.
“Duck hunting is a traditional Tasmanian pursuit, it’s important that it be done appropriately and in a humane way, but also it is very based on advice about sustainability of populations and we don’t have any concerns about that.”
