New Norfolk father of three Casey Farrell has been elected to the House of Assembly seat of Lyons, following a recount forced by last month’s resignation of sitting member Rebecca White.

Ms White resigned from state parliament to contest the upcoming federal election in the seat of Lyons, with sitting member Brian Mitchell stepping aside.

15 candidates from the 2024 state election nominated for the recount, including five candidates from the Labor Party, three from the Shooters, Farmers and Fishers Tasmania Party, one from the Jacqui Lambie Network and three independents.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission says Mr Farrell won 51.5% of the final round of the recount, narrowly defeating fellow Labor candidate Ben Dudman, with 58.5%.

The sprawling Lyons electorate covers the Central Highlands, East Coast and South-East of the state, as well as Elizabeth Town, Railton, Sheffield, Barrington and Wilmot on the North-West Coast.
