The House of Assembly has approved expenditure of $5 million for a centre on the North-EWest Coast to support victim-survicors of sexual crimes.

Known as an Arch centre, the facility will be developed along similar lines to Arch services in Launceston and Hobart.

Establishment of a North-West service is the key recommendations the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Response to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutionalised Settings.

Although the location of the new facility has been revealed, Police Minister Braddon MP Felix Ellis says it will be in place by the middle of next year.

Mr Ellis saysthe new facility will see eight sex crime investigators as well as more support staff and child safety services, including police, and has been designed in consultation with victim-survivors and experts.

He says there will be no marked police cars in the car park, no police uniforms, and no requirement for victim survivors to speak with police until, and only if, they are ready.
