A new report has shown Tasmania’s levels of elective surgery are the best in the country.

Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s Elective Surgery Wait Times has shown more than 21,000 elective surgeries have been performed in Tasmania so far this year – an increase of 5.2 per cent on last year.

Health Minister Guy Barnett says Tasmanian hospitals have recorded shorter-than-average waiting times for some surgeries, compared to similar hospitals nationwide.

For example, patients at the North-West Regional Hospital in Burnie waited 16 days less for carpel tunnell surgery, while those at the Mersey Community Hospital at Latrobe waited 94 days less for cataract surgery.

Mr Barnett says the results are impressive and due to hard work by doctors. nurses, health professionals, the Health Department, and the State Government.
