A second Royal Hobart Hospital campus will be built at New Town.

In an abrupt shift from previous plans to upgrade the old Repat Hospital on Davey Street to supplement the Royal, the Rockliff Government has unveiled a 20-year masterplan for what’s billed as a contemporary health and wellbeing precinct at St John’s Park.

The Premier says the site is ideal as there’s more room for future development and expansion as well as efficient co-location of services and additional parking.

Work is already underway on a 15-bed mental health facility and there’ll also be palliative, rehabilitation and geriatric care.

“Importantly, construction can commence at the site while other health services at the RHH and the Repatriation Hospital sites are maintained, preventing any disruption to patients using these services,” said Jeremy Rockliff.

“The 2023-24 Tasmanian Budget includes $2 million to finalise the development of this blueprint so that we can deliver this once-in-a-generation Precinct and ensure all Tasmanians can get the right support for their needs at the right place and at the right time.”

With an eye on the site’s significant heritage values, the government’s also flagging unique green spaces for community enjoyment and exercise.

The public is being encouraged to have a look at the draft masterplan here.
