Police teams have spent the day searching land and water near St Helens as the probe into the 1995 murder of Italian tourist Victoria Cafasso ramps up again.
The 20-year-old’s body was found at Freshwater Creek at Beaumaris south of St Helens with 17 stab wounds – items including the murder weapon and the victim’s towel were never recovered.
A 1970’s light-coloured Subaru station wagon seen in the area remains of interest, along with its driver, described as a surfer in his 20s with blonde hair, six feet tall, of slim build, very fit with tanned legs and arms.
Detective Acting Inspector Andrew Hanson says the latest search area has not previously been searched but is an area of interest following a recent review of the case.
Police say it is also as a result of information received from witnesses regarding the movements of a 1970s light coloured Subaru Station Wagon.
