TasPorts is preparing for the next major step in the delivery of the $240 million Quaylink port infrastructure project in Port of Devonport.
TasPorts CEO, Anthony Donald says QuayLink has taken delivery of its first headstock, an otherwise unassuming block of concrete set to be the first structural element of the new build that connects the piles with the wharf deck.
The headstock is one of 28 pre-cast pieces all of which are being manufactured in Tasmania by Hazell Brothers at Brighton and TasSpan at Latrobe.
Ulverstone-based VEC Civil Engineering is also manufacturing pre-cast elements of the project, while Hazell Brothers’ Burnie facility is also manufacturing beams and other components for the wharf.
Mr Donald says once lowered in place by a crane, the headstock is structurally connected to the supporting piles using concrete and steel reinforcement.
When completed, the Quaylink project will provide a new terminal for the replacement Spirit of Tasmania vessels, due to arrive next year, as well as a major upgrade for the nearby Searoad dedicated freight terminal.
