Off-shore wind zone revealed

Off-shore wind farms could become a common sight in Bass Strait in future years with the Federal Government opening up consultation for a proposed wind zone.

The 10,100 square kilometre zone stretches from off Bridport to off Wynyard and is 20km from shore at its closest point.

Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen says the zone has the potential to deliver 16 thousand Tasmanian jobs during the construction phase and several thousand on-going jobs.

Mr Bowen says Bass Strait as the site of a wind zone is a no-brainer because Bass Strait is such a windy location.

He says Tasmania’s potential as a renewable energy producer is huge.
