Serial killer to remain behind bars

Tasmanians behind a petition against paroling Melbourne serial killer Paul Denyer, instigated by a Coastal man, are welcoming the news he will “rot in jail.”

The Victorian Government is introducing new laws to restrict parole for serious offenders, specifically naming Denyer, who now won’t be released unless he is “terminally ill or incapacitated”.

The 51-year-old murdered a girl and two young women in 1993, including Hobart student Elizabeth Stevens, who was his first victim.

Ulverstone man Nathan Oud’s older sister was Elizabeth Stevens’ best friend before she moved to Melbourne and the man who started the petition to keep Denyer behind bars.

Mr Oud says the families of Denyer’s victims will be able to rest a little easier with some closure now provided.

He says he didn’t expect the petition to garner the support it did, thanking the more than 50,000 people who signed it and the media for publicising it.

Mr Oud says it’s comforting to know the petition had a role in the Government’s decision.
