A cold front lashing the state is already creating havoc, with more than 2,500 customers affected by power outages.
The largest affected area currently is Ulverstone and surrounds including Penguin and Gawler, with more than 1500 residents reportedly in the dark.
Tasnetworks says wind blowing across lines as well as lightning strikes in the North, are the likely culprits.
Several Northwest locations including parts of Rocky Cape, Boat Harbour and Latrobe are being warned to expect long delays for power restoration.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a statewide Severe Weather Warning for gusty north westerly winds today and damaging winds tomorrow morning.
Residents are being urged to take precautions to secure their properties, with winds not expected to ease until Saturday.
