Striking workers get parliamentary support

Premier Jeremy Rockliff has urged striking dairy workers and multi-national company Saputo to come together at the bargaining table.

Mr Rockliff yesterday met with maintenance workers from the company’s Burnie facility, who have been on strike for more than eight weeks, say they are being paid 23 per cent less than workers doing the same job across multiple Saputo sites in region al Victoria.

Unions supporting striking workers have called for a national supermarket boycott of Saputo products including Mersey Valley, Cheer, South Cape, Cracker Barrel and Tasmanian Heritage cheeses among others.

The Premier says he supports Tasmanian workers being paid fairly, telling Parliament he’s hoping for a quick resolution to the dispute.

The Green moved a motion calling on the Lower House to support the workers in their battle for wage parity – it was passed unanimously.
