Police examine missing Tasmanian's car

Queensland forensic specialists are examining bones found in a sunken car which belonged to a Tasmanian man missing for 13 years.

Stuart Gatehouse was 45 when he vanished during a trip from Kenilworth to Gympie in 2004 and his red 1986 Holden Commodore was recovered from Borumba Dam, near Imbil, on Thursday.

The car, discovered after a member of the public used a depth sounder to detect a large object near the dam's boat ramp, contained skeletal remains that are yet to be formally identified.

Detective Inspector David Drinnen told reporters on Friday it was far too early to speculate who the deceased person was.

He said forensic officers would continue to test the remains to confirm the identity.
