Gov rejects Mersey closure claim
The Tasmanian Government says it remains 100 per cent committed to the Mersey Community Hospital in the wake of social media speculation about its fate.
A Mersey Community Hospital Support Group member has claimed the Health Minister was overheard saying she wants to close the Latrobe facility.
Former Devonport Mayor and Senator Steve Martin also wants answers on when the hospital's Emergency Department will return to 24-hour operation.
Minister Sarah Courtney has come out swinging against the claims, dismissing them as totally baseless and damaging, at a time when a national search is underway to recruit more permanent doctors.
"Mr Martin has long called for the Mersey and Burnie hospitals to close, and a new hospital be built to replace them," she said.
"This is Steve Martin's policy - not the Government - which is 100% committed to the Mersey as a very important component of the delivery of health services in the North-West.”
