Big surge in pokie losses
Tasmanian poker machines claimed more than $18.5 million in August.
Treasury figures reveal nearly $600,000 a day was lost around Tasmania for the month, 20 per cent higher than August 2019.
While the influential hotels lobby argues the machines safeguard hundreds of jobs, Independent Legislative Councillor for Nelson, Meg Webb, argues the money hasn't gone to other struggling Tasmanian businesses.
“I am shocked by the careless attitude of the Government towards those impacted by pokies addiction, especially during the pandemic’s escalated vulnerability and stressful conditions.”
She claims Tasmanians have developed a problem with the machines during a vulnerable time and they'll carry that forward.
Poker machine takings on the West Coast rose by 33 per cent in August, the Central Coast municipality rose by 41 per cent, while the state's two casinos were up nearly 22 per cent.
