AMC boost for Launceston
Tasmania's Australian Maritime College will host an $85 million defence hub being promised by Labor.
$20 million will be announced today for stage 1 of the defence, innovation and design precinct at Newnham.
Shadow Science Minister Kim Carr says it'll be key to boosting Australia's maritime research and development capability.
"There is no doubt that the university is able to work with leading firms, nationally and locally, to secure Tasmania's place in what is a global industry, to secure high-quality, high-paying, blue-collar jobs," he said.
Deputy Labor Leader Tanya Plibersek is also upbeat about the prospects.
"The Precinct would bring small to medium enterprises into AMC to leverage the Precinct’s offer of co-working spaces, collaborative research, shared infrastructure and access to workforce training," she said.
"The new facilities will house a fit-for-purpose series of labs and workshops that will provide the entire range of technical services required to develop hydrodynamic test rigs and models in secure environments."
