Last standing on GM free

Tasmania is set to stand alone on genetically modified produce in Australia.

Farmers in mainland South Australia will be permitted to grow GM food crops next season after the state government there lifted a moratorium that has been in place since 2004.

It's being celebrated by the industry there, in light of an independent review finding the ban had cost that state $33 million in lost opportunity.

Tasmania's government recently extended the state's GM moratorium by another 10 years, which the local Farmers and Graziers Association applauded, as many international markets including the European Union demand GM free products.
