Australia Post has announced a nationwide rollout of citronella spray for its Posties to address increasing dog-related incidents. Starting in June, all Posties will be equipped with the water-based, non-harmful spray designed to deter aggressive dogs and ensure their safety.

The decision comes as new data reveals over 1,150 dog-related incidents have occurred in the last six months, more than 44 incidents per week. Over 40% of these encounters happen on customers’ properties, particularly when front doors are opened for parcel deliveries, while 57% occur on streets, often involving roaming or unrestrained dogs.

Citronella Spray: A Proven Deterrent
The spray, which distracts dogs temporarily and allows Posties to move to safety, has already proven effective during a two-phase trial in high-risk areas. Results showed an 80% success rate in deterring dogs and reducing harm to Posties. The spray will be distributed first to high-risk regions, with all Posties equipped by the end of July. Parcel Delivery Drivers will be included in the program later in the year.

Australia Post General Manager of Safety, Russell Munro, emphasized the urgency of this measure, stating, “The safety of our team members is a core value at Australia Post. Despite public awareness campaigns, we’re still seeing alarming rates of dog-related incidents. This spray is a last-resort tool to protect our Posties from harm.”

Postie Perspectives
Western Australian Postie and former veterinary nurse Bronwyn Adamson shared her personal experience with a dog attack while on the job. “A dog escaped from behind a gate and bit me, leaving severe bruising and a puncture wound. The citronella spray will give me peace of mind, knowing I have something to protect me in case of another incident,” she said.

Currently, Australia Post’s handheld devices have flagged 35,000 active dog-related hazards, a 20% increase since late last year. These hazards warn Posties of potential risks and the need for heightened awareness.

A Call for Responsible Dog Ownership
Australia Post continues to stress the importance of dog owners ensuring their pets are secured during deliveries. To help, the organization has introduced the “PAWS for Delivery” steps for dog owners:

  1. Sit: Place your dog in a secure area, such as a separate room or behind a locked gate, when expecting a delivery.
  2. Stay: Keep your dog in this safe location while the Postie delivers your parcel.
  3. Secure: Ensure your dog remains behind a door or gate so the Postie can safely access your property.

For those unable to secure their dog, Australia Post suggests using a nearby 24/7 Parcel Locker to collect deliveries.

Australia Post says they are committed to analyzing incident data and evaluating risk management practices to ensure the effectiveness of the citronella spray program. All team members will receive training on using the spray responsibly and only as a last resort.

While the spray is a new tool, prevention remains the primary focus. Securing dogs during deliveries is the best way to protect both Posties and pets.
