We shall not feed them after midnight… or will we?
Warner Bros. has put a date on Gremlins 3 after dropping a very short clip showing a rustling backpack. A Mogwai mutters “Uh-oh,” and the caption says 10.6.28. Only In Theaters.
That is almost a full year later than the old target of 19 November 2027. David Zaslav first flagged that 2027 date in November last year, when Warner Bros. Discovery said it had greenlit the film. The new clip landed Thursday morning teasing the film. Chris Columbus, who wrote the 1984 original before going on to Home Alone and Mrs Doubtfire, is producing and directing. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein wrote the script; they’re the pair behind Final Destination: Bloodlines. Other coverage has also put Hannah Marks on a later draft.
Producers are Columbus, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe. Steven Spielberg is back as executive producer through Amblin. The first film was a nasty little Christmas comedy with real bite. It took US$151 million domestically off an $11 million budget. Gremlins 2: The New Batch in 1990 went broader and funnier, sending up the original. That one stalled at $41 million, though it still has fans. If this third film lands on schedule, it will be 38 years since the last one.
Warner Bros. has not said why the date moved. The simplest read is that cameras are not rolling yet, and early October is a better slot for this kind of film than mid-November. The studio has done well with that first weekend of October before. The timing has people talking. This week’s Paramount–Warner settlement says the combined studio has to release at least 30 films a year or cop a US$30 million fine per missing title, and if they still fall short they can be forced to sell Miramax. This is spreading around online as “make the movies or lose the rights.”
But it is not quite that… Scream already sits with Paramount and Spyglass, and the early films were Miramax, which is how the two stories got glued together. Gremlins is still with Warner Bros. and Amblin. Chris Columbus can block a reboot, and Zach Galligan has said for years that a third film had to happen soon or it might not happen at all. None of that is the same as a clause that says this date slip costs them Gizmo or Ghostface.
No cast yet. Columbus has said he wants the creatures done with puppets again, not a wall of CGI and fans can’t wait!

and Amblin Entertainment commenting “Stay out of the light until then… 👀”
