Atomic Heart

Mundfish’s first title, “Atomic Heart,” is a single-player first-person shooter game with a retrofuturistic twist that blends super-powered shooting and first-person puzzling. The game’s standout feature is its visual design and world-building, which takes players on an alternate-history journey to an imagined past that has been perverted by advanced technology.

Set in a utopian world, peace and prosperity have been shattered by the very technology that is sustaining its way of life. Robots have turned on their masters, creating deadly havoc. The player takes on the role of Major Nechaev, who is of Russian heritage, and the developers suggest that players try the game in their native tongue to get the full experience. Playing in the recommended language can add to the adventure and immerse the player in the game’s world.

One of the most memorable aspects of the game is the level design. The partially ruined labs, facilities, and transportation hubs are incredibly detailed and provide an immersive experience. The game’s enemies are superbly designed, ranging from standard drones to moustache-infused terminators and legions of unique creatures that will make it a habit of ending your day, so players should choose their moments to unleash.

The protagonist’s main system, assistant, and weapon is an experimental glove that helps players throughout their journey. Upgrading its skills will enable players to use elements like electricity and ice to give them the upper hand in battle and puzzling. The animations around this feature are gorgeous and provide some memorable and entertaining moments.

The game’s weapon design and crafting is highly polished, from upgrading an axe with extra spikes and better handling to adding elemental energy cartridges to pack an extra punch. Players will find themselves scrounging for parts to level up their items and do as much damage as possible.

The soundtrack, courtesy of composer Mick Gordon, perfectly complements the game’s tone and action. The music draws players in, even during the softer moments. Interestingly Mick Gordon donated all of his earnings from this title to support Ukraine

“Atomic Heart” is a lengthy, tough, and terrific-looking game that is worth playing for dystopian science fiction and shooter lovers. The game has a perfect blend of super-powered shooting and first-person puzzling, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The elaborately designed enemies provide a unique experience, and it’s the closest experience to playing “BioShock” in years.
