Cannabis attitude shift

An Australian Institute of Health and Welfare survey finding 83% of Tasmanians support decriminalising cannabis “lobbed the ball” into the state government’s court.

The Australian Lawyers Alliance framed up an amendment to the state’s Misuse of Drugs Act based on the ACT’s approach, which the Tasmanian government has declined to adopt.

The Alliance’s Fabiano Cangelosi in Hobart insists the government is obliged to reflect community values.

“Permitted possession of very small quantities of cannabis, growing of small quantities of cannabis, it does not legalise the supply of cannabis, this really is an incremental step, a small step.”

 The government’s responded that it supports medicinal cannabis but has no plan to change laws for its recreational use.
